bodyvoices

”When a dancer comes onstage, he is not just a blank slate that the choreographer has written on. Behind him he has all the decisions he has made in life … Each time, he has chosen, and in what he is onstage you see the result of those choices. You are looking at the person he is, and the person, who, at this point, he cannot help but be …

Exceptional dancers, in my experience, are also exceptional people, people with an attitude toward life, a kind of quest, and an internal quality. They know who they are, and they show it to you, willingly”.

- Mikhail Baryshnikov

 bodyvoices

bodyVoices is a photographical dance project where I tell a story about 15 exceptional dancers and their path.

They are all different – younger and older – and from different styles of dance – from hip hop to classical ballet. Common for them all is that they have developed their talent in different directions, and that they are truly unique as dancers.

I have photographed dancers for many years – both on stage and off. What fascinates me the most about good dancers is their ability to use their personality to make the dance unique and something way more than just a physical exercise. That´s why dancers make great photographs; a sculpture, a blurry movement, a delicate mood, an explosion. Their voices are unique – but the dance is common. That´s why the project is called bodyVoices.

The project is not about creating just random, traditional dance photos. I want the photos to represent the personality of each dancer, regardless of the dance style. The photographs will be large and presented with a modern format through C-prints on aluminum. The photos will show as an exhibition in 2014. Stay tuned. You can see the photographs here
